X-Wind/Crosswind Training
All pilots benefit from a technical understanding of correct crosswind landing procedures and crosswind landing practice. Crosswind landings are the number one "real world" emergency that pilots will experience. As a student, this emergency might occur within the first few hours after receiving solo status. If a pilot is lucky enough to postpone this type of emergency, time and experience can make it difficult to admit that he/she is uncomfortable with crosswind landings.
A report published by the FAA examining weather-related aviation accidents from 2003-2007, reported that over half (53%) of all weather related accidents were caused by wind, and over the majority (67%) of those accidents occurred during approach, landing or on a missed approach.
A two-hour session in the Xwind simulator provides 100% crosswind landing-specific instruction and practice. During this intense training, you will gain stronger rudder skills and muscle memory necessary for landing safely in crosswind turbulence. You will develop the skills for stabilized approaches throughout your final approach and touchdown. You will also learn to use weather resources to calculate and predict crosswinds en route to your destination. Finally, we will teach you how to calculate the crosswind component, in flight, with out the use of graphs or charts.
